How the Methods are Organized
The 5M Structure

The 5M Structure helps organise the 65+ methods in this book into five practical categories: Motivate, Meet, Map, Make, and Manage. It’s not a fixed process, but a flexible structure that supports orientation and method selection. Each category reflects different kinds of activities in systems thinking – whether it’s clarifying intent, bringing people together, mapping systems, developing responses, or reflecting on what changes. The 5M Structure is designed to help users find suitable methods based on purpose and context, making it easier to apply systems thinking in real-world situations.
The 5M’s
Motivate: Clarify purpose and need for action
Clarifies why intervention is needed and what purpose it serves. Helps teams assess motivation, urgency, and alignment with larger goals.
Meet: Engage stakeholders and perspectives
Focuses on identifying key stakeholders, facilitating discussions, and surfacing different perspectives. Brings people together to build dialogue, collaboration, and shared understanding.
Map: Understand and visualize the system
Supports teams in visualising structures, dependencies, recurring patterns, and leverage points. Supports a deeper understanding of system dynamics and where interventions may have the greatest effect.
Make: Take action and create solutions
Supports improving processes, testing ideas, and developing solutions. Encourages teams to challenge existing structures, experiment with new approaches, and refine solutions iteratively.
Manage: Evaluate and adapt over time
Enables teams to track changes, measure progress, and respond to emerging patterns. Supports organisations monitor outcomes, evaluate effectiveness, and adjust as conditions evolve.
A method matters only when it serves the situation.
